Step 1 - Remove 6-pin Socket
This model is tender driven, with a 6-pin DCC ready socket factory fitted. To create space, this will be removed and replaced with a Next18 socket wiring harness.
Detach the tender from the loco and undo the four screws underneath so the body comes off.
Desolder all wires from the motor and the pickups, then remove the PCB.
Step 2 - Fit Next18 Socket
Solder new short black and red wires between the tender wheel pickups and the underside of the tender pin pickups. Bend the tender pickups over so they are flat: the wires should be underneath.
Solder red and black wires from the tender pickups to the Next18 socket.
Solder orange and grey wires from the motor to the Next18 socket.
Solder two brown wires to the Next18 socket for the speaker.
Step 3 - Fit Speaker
A small YouChoos speaker will fit in this tight space without the tender body requiring any modification.
Glue or black tack the speaker in place on top of the tender pin pickups, making sure no metal part of the speaker can touch them.
Solder the brown wires to the speaker, then fix the wires in place using some kapton tape.
Step 4 - Refit Tender Body
Refit the tender body. You may need to move the speaker or socket around slightly so everything fits in correctly.
Step 5 - Fit Decoder
Clip the decoder into the socket, in this example an ESU LokSound 5, then refit the coal load.
Reattach the tender to the loco, and the conversion is complete.
