Fitting sound in the Kato TGV model is fairly straightforward. Follow the non-sound Kato TGV DCC conversion guide first. The best way to fit sound is to add a Next18 socket and small ESU speaker into the motorized driving car body.

Models that this guide applies to include:

  • Kato TGV in SNCF orange/grey livery (S14701)
  • Kato TGV in SNCF orange/grey livery (10-198)
  • Kato TGV in France-Suisse SNCF blue/grey livery (10-909)

Step 1 - Install Speaker

With the standard motor and directional lighting conversion complete, fix a small ESU speaker just behind the Next18 socket.

Wire two brown wires from the speaker to the socket.

Step 2 - Program Decoders

Program your sound decoder with the ESU TGV Sound Project.

Now place the motorized and dummy cars on your test track and programme them both with the same loco Id.

Turn on the directional lights using F0, and confirm that you have red at one end and white at the other. Change direction on your controller and confirm the colours switch over. If you have the same colour at both ends of the train, go back to the lighting PCB of one of the cars and swap the white and yellow wires around. Alternatively, you can program your decoder to switch the lights round - consult the manual for how to do this.
