Kato Class 800 Motor Decoder Install Guide

Buy Kato N Gauge Class 800 DCC Conversion Service from £20.00

This guide shows how to install the Kato EM13 decoder into the Kato N Gauge Class 800 models. It is possible to fit any small decoder in these models, essentially by following the guide that shows how to install a sound decoder into the motorized centre car, but using a non-sound decoder.

This guide covers all versions of the Kato N Gauge Class 800 models, which are identical other than the liveries applied:

Step 1 - Install Decoder

Unclip the body from the centre coach, then the underfloor component. Insert the decoder, so it sits correctly between the rail pickup contract strip, and the motor contact strip. Once pushed in all the way, it will drop into the recess and sit flush.

Removing the bogie makes this step easier, as you can then take the prop shaft out of the way. This isn't essential however, with a bit of care it can be done with the bogie in situ.

The image shows a sound decoder fitted, other than the two speaker wires it's exactly the same.

Step 2 - Refit Body

Clip the underfloor component back on, and then carefully refit the body.

Step 3 - Test

Place the unit on your programming track, and confirm that you can successfully read the loco ID back. Assuming all is well, the conversion is complete.
